About Diakonos / Fifth Street Ministries

Serving since 1988

We’re a non-profit organization, founded to provide the basic needs of the homeless and working poor in our community. Our founders, Gary and Patti West, opened Diakonos in Burnsville, North Carolina in 1988, to provide the essentials — food, water, safety, freedom from domestic abuse and the opportunity to move toward self-reliance.

Today, our campus on Fifth Street in downtown Statesville, NC, sits in the middle of one of our poorest neighborhoods. The abandoned houses, overgrown lots and memorials to fallen gang members only hint at the troubles it sees.

We’re right where we need to be, in the midst of the people who need our help the most. Our campus welcomes those who need caring, sharing and compassion.

Community Kitchen - Fifth Street Ministries

We change to meet people’s needs

Over the years, Diakonos has evolved to meet the dynamic and ever-evolving needs of the community we serve. We took over “The Soup Kitchen” in 1992 and today, our Community Kitchen (renamed to reflect its outreach) serves three meals every day of the year.

In 2016, our Veterans Transitional Housing Program opened in partnership with the Iredell-Statesville Community Enrichment Corporation the Piedmont Veterans Assistance Council.

The needs of the people we serve are great and there are never easy answers or solutions. Through it all, we work hard to help them build more stable, productive lives.
