Diakonos, Inc.
Fifth Street Ministries
Do justice...love mercy

Since January 1, 1990, Diakonos, Inc. (doing business as
Fifth Street Ministries) has been providing a variety of
services to the impoverished citizens of Iredell County
and remains the only organization of this type in this
area. In the early years, services were offered from
the old Pressly Memorial ARP Church on Fifth Street in
Statesville, North Carolina. In the 1991, when city and
county school systems consolidated, Fifth Street
Ministries was able to lease (and eventually purchase)
from the school system the Avery Sherrill School
which was made vacant because of the consolidation.
The women’s shelter (My Sister’s House) stayed behind
in the old facility and remained there until May 2002
when a new facility was constructed in a different
location. In 1996 a new clinic building was constructed
through a grant from Kate B. Reynolds Foundation, the
Cannon Foundation, and tremendous community
support. In 1998, the dental wing was constructed. The
clinic building was built primarily by volunteers,
headed up by Gerald Grant, Grady Lippard and Wayne
Rogers, thus the name of the building – “The Grant-
Lippard-Rogers Building.” Currently a capital campaign
continues to raise funds pay for the new facility that
was built by G.L. Wilson Building Company, the same
company that constructed My Sister’s House in 2002.

Current services of Fifth Street Ministries include an
Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing, Night
Shelter, Soup Kitchen, Battered Women's Shelter (My
Sister's House), a healthcare component, a Displaced
Homemaker Program, and an educational component.

Our corporate name, "Diakonos," is a Greek word that
means "to serve."  We strive to carry out its meaning
as we work to address the needs of the impoverished,
the hungry, the abused, the homeless, and those
without health insurance.  Our doors are open to
anyone who is in need of our services.

David Hicks, local artist from Union
Grove, NC, created an original
handcrafted wooden chest featured
on this year's Card of Hope.  David is
a talented artisan, with artistic
abilities that include painting,
photography, pottery and
woodworking.  Rather than wasting resources, David finds beauty in what may have
been cast off as having with no worth.  The "Chest of Hope" he created is built from
pine and cedar wood found in a century old home and
old barns in Northern Iredell County.
We are honored to have David as our featured artist in 2011.
For a minimum donation of  $5.00, you may send this card in honor of a friend, co-worker,
business associate, or family member this Christmas season.
Instead of honoring your friends, clients, etc. with gifts that will be forgotten soon after the
holidays, remember them with a gift that will have a lasting effect. Giving a gift of this sort will
mean that even after the nativity set has been packed away and the presents placed aside, the
work of feeding the hungry, comforting the lost, and encouraging the poor will continue for all
who are in need.

Cards may be purchased at Gigi's or Sabine's in downtown Statesville, Jennings Store in Union
Grove or at Fifth Street Ministries.

Proceeds will benefit all programs of Fifth Street Ministries.
